Cello By Collin-mezin, Mirecourt C.1885. Labelled And Branded H.c.sylvestre 1890. Collin-Mezin was born in 1841 and set up his workshop in Paris in 1868. He was awarded gold and silver medals for his instruments at the Paris exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900 and was named an officer de L'academe des Beaux-Arts in 1884. His instruments have a reputation for the flexibility of their sound, sonority and evenness of tone. They have been played by many a famous performer.
This particular cello was sold by H.C. Silvestre, who traded under the name of Silvestre neveu, in Paris and is labelled as such.
The cello has a two piece back of maple of a strong medium-broad curl slightly descending across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar curl. The two piece front of pine of a strong medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks. The varnish is a rich orange-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
