Viola By Johann Michaelo Willer Prague 1802 Johann Michael Willer was born in Vils in 1753 and worked in Prague between 1780 and 1826. He had a reputation for producing attractive instruments of a very high quality with fine attention to detail. The tone of the instruments he produced is said to be full and strong.
This example is typical of his work and dates from 1802. It has a two piece back of maple of plain wood. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar wood.
The violin has a two piece pine front, fine grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.
The varnish is a rich red brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:

Ribs: Upper treble crack running from heel.
Pegbox: Patch between G and D peg on bass and treble sides.
