Half his time is spent restoring and the rest making instruments. He makes eight to 10 violins or violas a year - and each one will take up to 250 hours.
He has a reputation in violin circles not just for the quality of his work but in particular for his varnishes. He has nearly 30 years experience as a maker and spent 14 years working for Ealing Strings, during which time the Viola offered here was made. He set up his own workshop in West London in 1992.
The example offered here dates from 1972 and has a two piece back of maple of a medium curl ascending across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a somewhat broader curl.
The Viola has a two piece pine front of medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.
