Viola By Paul Bowers Edinburgh 2005 New Work Group Paul Bowers, following a career in music, studied violin making at the Newark School of Violin Making, graduating with distinction in 1976. Success in major violin making competitions established his reputation as one of Britain's leading contemporary violin makers.
His violin making has continued to develop since those early days, and he produces instruments of great distinction based on over 20 years of practical experience and research. His instruments are now played throughout the world.
Each instrument is based on an original design and constructed entirely by hand using traditional workshop techniques.
This example is typical of his work and has a one piece back of maple cut on the slab of faint medium-fine and several bird's eye. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a strong medium curl.
The viola has a two piece front of pine of medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.
The varnish is a rich red-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
