Violin By Aristide Cavalli, Cremona 1927. Aristide Cavalli was born in Alessandria in 1856 and was a pupil of Beltrani. This influence is certainly displayed in his work, although his violins also retain a fair degree of originality. He was based in Cremona between 1880 and 1930 where he produced violins which are widely regarded as being of excellent quality.
This particular example dates from towards the end of his career, having been made in 1927.
The violin has a two piece back of maple of a medium curl slightly ascending across the back from the joint on the right and running horizontally on the left. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar curl.
The violin has a two piece front of pine which is of a medium grain.
The varnish is a rich red-orange colour on a yellow ground which is also a trademark of Cavalli's work.
It is labelled on the inner back. Label Reads:
