Violin By Eugenio Degani, Venice 1886. Eugenio Degani is widely regarded as one of the master violin makers from this period. Born in 1840 he worked at Montagnana until 1883 before moving to Trieste in 1885 and then subsequently to Venice.
His work has a reputation for superb quality and precision as well as utilising fine tonewoods. The varnish used was Degani's own secret and closely guarded formula.
His instruments are described as having a very clear tonal quality, responsive and very 'Italianesque' in character.
This fine example of his work dates from 1886 and is based on a Guarnieri model.
The violin has a two piece back of maple with a strong medium-broad curl running horizontally across the back from the joint. The ribs are of a similar curl, with the pegbox and scroll of a somewhat broader curl.
The instrument has a two piece front of pine which is of a medium-fine grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.
The trademark varnish is of an orange-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
