Nicolas Augustin Chappuy was born in 1730 and worked in Mirecourt and Paris. A prolific worker he produced a significant number of instruments during his lifetime. He died in 1784. Famous patrons include the violinist, conductor and friend of Paganini, Habeneck, who played a Chappuy for 37 years whilst professor at the Paris Conservatoire.
This example is typical of his work and has a two piece back of maple of a medium-broad curl descending across the back from the joint. It is branded on back below the button CHAPPUY. The ribs are of a mixed faint curl to plain. The pegbox and scroll of plain wood.
The two piece front of pine is of a medium grain in the center becoming finer towards the flanks.
The varnish of a medium dark red-brown colour on a yellow ground.

Front: wing crack lower hole bass f-hole up to edge, two cracks running from lower hole towards lower edge, two other cracks running up from edge. Some repaired cosmetic worm damage to the back.
