Violin By Frederick William Chanot, London 1899. Frederick William Chanot was born in London in 1857, the son of the famous maker Georges Chanot and trained by his grandfather, also Georges, in Paris. Renowned for the quality of his workmanship and also for the standard of his varnish, which he claimed was made with the same materials and preparation as the Cremonese makers.
The instrument offered here is an excellent example of his later work, generally regarded as his best period.
The violin has a two piece maple back of a medium-broad curl running horizontally across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar curl.
The two piece pine front is of a medium grain.
The varnish, to which he devoted much of his time, is of a rich red-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
