Description:

Violin By Jean Baptiste Colin, Mirecourt 1894.

Jean Baptiste Colin worked in Mirecourt although his work is sometimes inscribed as being from Paris. His violins have been described as having a strong tone and are modelled after Collin-Mézin.

This example is typical of his work and has a two piece maple back of a strong medium curl descending across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a somewhat finer curl.

The violin has a two piece front of pine of a medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.

The varnish is a warm orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.
