Violin By Jean Baptiste Colin, Mirecourt 1894. Jean Baptiste Colin worked in Mirecourt although his work is sometimes inscribed as being from Paris. His violins have been described as having a strong tone and are modelled after Collin-Mézin.
This example is typical of his work and has a two piece maple back of a strong medium curl descending across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a somewhat finer curl.
The violin has a two piece front of pine of a medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks.
The varnish is a warm orange-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
