Violin By Walter H Mayson 1892 Walter H. Mayson was born in Cheetwood in 1835 and worked primarily in Manchester until his death in 1904. He is known for the fine quality of his later work as well as some of the individual and interesting names he gave to his instruments which are regarded as having a very good and full tone.
This particular example dates from 1892 and is named 'The Druid'.
The violin has a two piece back of maple of a strong medium-broad curl running horizontally across the back from the joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of a similar curl.
The instrument has a two piece pine front with a strong medium-broad grain.
The varnish is a rich orange-brown colour on a yellow ground. Label Reads:
Deus adsit, obsit Mundus.
